    Multi-functional, high-performance construction materials

Concrete is one of the most important construction materials in the world. Many researchers have studied the properties of concrete and modified its ingredients consisting of fine/coarse aggregates, water, and cement to improve the concrete strength or durability. Recently, research on the development of multi-functional and high-performing construction materials has received increasing attention.

Bacteria capable of precipitating minerals are incorporated into cementitious materials to fill the cracks in concrete structures. Biomineralization-based self-healing concrete will be applied to construction fields for sustainable crack-healing and enhanced durability of concrete structures.

Due to the outstanding electrical and thermal properties of CNT, CNT is incorporated into cementitious composites for multi-functionality. CNT-based cementitious composites have been fabricated to be used as self-heating elements and piezoresistive sensors, and they can be applied to floor heating, de-icing, and structural health monitoring in construction fields. CNT is also incorporated into polymeric composites, and the composites can be used as piezoresistive sensors having high flexibility and sensitivity. The fabricated highly stretchable CNT-incorporated piezoresistive sensors can be applied to robot and human motion monitoring.
